Mert Lawwill Scored the Heat Victory and Went on to Win the National
In this week’s Throwback we dial back the clock to 1969 and that year’s Castle Rock TT National. The photo shows the start of the first heat race and it’s Mert Lawwill (18 ) starting on the inside. Others in the Heat included Skip Van Leeuwen (59), one of the area favorites Sonny Burres (69), Emil Ahola (80), Eddie Wirth (84) and Gregg Morris (10V) on the outside. Lawwill not only won the heat race, but went on to take victory in the national over Burres and Dick Mann. Lawwill won the ’69 AMA Grand National Championship.
